Advising
During my time at Casper College it has become abundantly clear that students AND staff struggle with advising under myCC info. One way I have battled this is to create an advising form for students in whatever degree path they are taking. The advising form is shared through the G-Suite we utilize and allows students the ability to edit the document. The document is then updated throughout the semesters so the student has a quick way to determine what courses are needed, completed, and in-progress.
Students are explained the advising process in the following manner:
Certificate: This is still a 2 year process, as the EMS courses must be taken in the semesters noted. Generally, the certificate is for non-traditional older college students OR individuals who are associated with a paid fire department. This is the minimum national requirement for students to begin working in the EMS workforce.
AAS: This is for the college student who knows they want a degree, but maybe they don't understand why. Or they want a degree but they don't think they want to move into management or they are unsure where their life will take them. This degree is also recommended for students who do not enjoy math -- there is no math course associated to this degree. The difference between an AAS and AS boils down to Math and Science Courses - this degree opted for Science (Anatomy and Physiology) over Math.
AS: This is a true transfer degree. This degree will set the student up to transfer into a Bachelors Program easily. This degree is recommended for the student who KNOWS they want to eventually go into PA, MD, FNP, RN, ect. Math 1400 is required here - if a student has something above MATH 1400 of course I will substitute that in. Math also requires a placement test as outlined below.
Both degrees require English - which requires a placement test, ACT/SAT Scores that are no more than 2 years old, or Ed Ready followed by that placement test. All three tracts are open to ANY student, those are just my explanations for why someone would choose one or the other.
